Your Kid Is Not 23 Months Old. They’re Almost 2. Stop It.

There needs to be a cultural intervention for parents who insist on announcing their child’s age in months long after the child has stopped resembling a helpless, floppy, soft-boned potato.

If your kid is old enough to:

  • Walk with intent
  • Throw items when displeased
  • Shake their head “no”
  • Or scroll a damn iPhone

Then we are done counting in months.

The Hard Cut-Off Is 12 Months

Once your child hits one, the calendar system we all use kicks in.
After 12 months, we no longer speak in fractions or subdivisions. We say years like functioning members of society. When you tell someone your child is 18 months, you are not delivering clarity. You are forcing a stranger to do math against their will. You are assigning an unsolicited pop quiz.

Just say one and a half.

The phrase already exists. The language already prepared it for you. You are choosing chaos.

Saying “27 Months” Is a Personality Problem

The parents who proudly announce that their kid is “27 months” are not being precise — they are performing.
Because no one says:

“We’ve been married 84 months.”
“I’ve lived here 126 months.”
“I’ve worked here 30 months.”
Unless they are on house arrest or participating in a clinical study.

If your child can:

  • Make eye contact with judgment
  • Throw a tantrum with narrative structure
  • Select which snack they want by pointing aggressively

They have entered Year Territory.
No more months.

This Isn’t About Your Kid. It’s About You Needing Validation.

This month-counting behavior is not developmental awareness. It’s not parenting excellence. It’s not nuance.
It is attention-seeking disguised as specificity. You want someone to gasp and say:

“Wow! Already?!”

But I promise you: No one is marveling. Everyone is simply exhausted by your math puzzles.

If Your Child Can Ruin Your Day, They Are Too Old for Months

When your child is fully capable of:

  • Throwing themselves on the ground in a grocery store
  • Arguing about which cup their juice is in
  • Screaming because you peeled their banana wrong

They are too old to be described like a block of aged cheese.

Your child is not “22 months”. Your child is almost two. Your child has rage and preferences now.
That is a year-based creature. Speak accordingly.

The Rule (It’s One Sentence)

If the number is over 11, you say years.

Always. No exceptions.

If your child’s age requires someone to divide by 12, you have already lost.

Say:
One
One and a half
Two
Two and a half
Three

Like a person who understands how time works.

Because here’s the truth: If your kid can form opinions and tantrums, but you’re still using months, everyone is judging you.
Quietly.
Ruthlessly.
Correctly.
